What is an e-Way Bill? When and who can issue them?

An e-Way bill is an electronic statement of movement of goods that is generated via an online portal. Waybills are preparations by the carriers for shipments that contain details about the shipment, route, and charges. This can be considered as a popular answer to the question:

What is an e-waybill?

An e-way bill is a permit required for the interstate or intrastate transportation of goods worth more than INR 50,000. In addition to the details of the goods, the consignor, the recipient, and the transporter are included in the document. It can be generated electronically through the GSTN. You can track your credit's movement through Okcredit.

A mandatory e-way bill will be required for interstate supplies from April 1, 2018. Upon generating an e-way bill, a unique E-way Bill Number (EBN) is assigned to the entity generating the bill and provided to the supplier, recipient, and transporter. Continue reading this article for more information about the e-waybill benefits and how to make an e-waybill.

Who can issue an e-way bill?

If the value of the goods being transported is less than INR 50,000, registered transport companies and shipping companies can generate and issue an electronic waybill. In addition to unregistered sellers or their transporters, they can also generate an e-way bill as well. This means an e-way bill can be generated by both registered and non-registered individuals.

When can I issue an e-way bill?

An e-way bill is created when the supplier must transport multiple consignments of goods in one vehicle. After seeing when to issue an e-waybill, you can focus on how to create an e-waybill.

E-way bill benefits

For transportation of goods across state lines, it is the easiest and most convenient way to create a bill of lading. The transition from departmental policing to self-declaration is crucial for the movement of goods.

A taxpayer/transporter does not have to go to a tax office/checkpoint in order to generate an e-way bill/move goods from one state to another. As there are no check posts under the GST regime, there is no delay at check posts, and goods can be moved more quickly, allowing optimum utilisation of vehicles/resources.

Its purpose is to make e-way bills as user-friendly as possible. The process of generating e-way bills is straightforward and easy. We must establish safeguards and checks to ensure smooth tax administration, and improve the processes that tax officers follow to verify e-way bills. An e-waybill offers the following additional benefits.

1. Invoice tracking in real-time

Input tax credits (ITC) can be delivered faster by e-invoicing because invoices can be tracked in real-time via the supplier. You can manage your invoices and employees through Okstaff.

2. B2B invoices are reported one time only

Taxpayers use e-invoicing when they report the invoice only once, and the Invoice Registration Portal (IRP) authenticates the invoice and issues it an Invoice Reference Number (IRN). The details will automatically appear in a GSTR-1 return after authentication. Reports can now be generated automatically, rather than manually.

3. Easy creation of e-way bill

Taxpayers can generate the e-way bill easily via e-invoicing since they only need to update vehicle details. An e-way bill's Part-A will automatically be filled in with details from the e-invoice that has been authenticated through the GST portal.

4. Aiding the buyers

E-invoices are shared with the buyer, who is mentioned on the e-invoice after they are uploaded onto the GST portal for authentication. The buyer will be able to reconcile his purchase order against the e-invoice and accept/reject the invoice directly on their mobile device.

5. Frauds are reduced

Tax authorities will be able to use real-time information to reduce frauds.

6. Reduced data entry errors

E-invoicing generates a single invoice that is uploaded onto the portal, which facilitates multipurpose reporting. After invoicing is authenticated, the invoices will be transferred to the GST portal and e-waybill portal in real-time. With automatic data generation, taxpayers won't have to manually enter data into their GST returns, thereby reducing data entry errors.

7. Allows interoperability

The e-invoices are written according to a standard format, so they can be read by the software they generated. This enhances interoperability.

8. Curb tax evasion

The real-time accessibility of data will reduce the scope of invoice manipulation since invoices will start to appear before the transaction is completed. Therefore, faking GST invoices will become increasingly difficult, and in the same e-way, only genuine ITC can be claimed. Detailed information about input tax credits and output taxes is readily available, which makes it easier for tax officials to track fake input credits.

9. QR code

It is essential to have GST invoices for calculating the ITC. It may happen that an assessee loses an invoice or needs to obtain additional copies of this invoice. In these circumstances, QR codes will prove invaluable. By scanning this code, the assessee is able to generate the bill in PDF format as many times as he or she desires by scanning this code.

FAQs

Q. What happens if an E-Way Bill is generated, but goods are not transported?

Ans. When the portal generates the E-way bill, it is cancelled electronically within 24 hours of its generation. When an officer verifies it during transit, there is no possibility of cancellation.

Q. What is a transporter ID?

Ans. When the value of goods exceeds the above limit, even an unregistered transporter must generate e-Way Bills. Since the transporter will not have a GSTIN, the concept of Transporter ID is introduced. Transporters who are not registered will receive a Transporter ID, which has to be displayed on every E-Way Bill instead of their GSTIN.
