India's detergent market in 2026 is led by Surf Excel by value (₹8,200 crore sales in 2022, per Business Standard) and Ghadi by volume. On a 1 kg pack, MRPs checked on BigBasket in August 2026 run from ₹48 (Nirma Active) to ₹315 (Ariel Matic Front Load), so the "best" brand depends on whether you wash by hand or machine.
Which detergent brands lead the Indian market right now?
Three companies own most of the shelf: Hindustan Unilever (Surf Excel, Rin, Wheel, Sunlight), Procter & Gamble (Ariel, Tide) and RSPL (Ghadi), with Nirma and Jyothy Labs (Henko) behind them. HUL's three detergent brands together held 43% of the market in 2022, the highest in a decade, according to Business Standard (Feb 2023). Ghadi took the volume lead in 2012 and RSPL still claims it, but no current independent volume share is public, so treat that as "widely cited" rather than measured.
The table below uses 1 kg pack MRPs (not discounted prices) checked on BigBasket on 22 August 2026. MRPs vary by region and pack size.
| Brand | Parent company | Indicative MRP per kg (Aug 2026) | Segment |
|---|---|---|---|
| Surf Excel | Hindustan Unilever | ₹128 (Easy Wash) to ₹290 (Matic) | Premium |
| Ariel | Procter & Gamble | ₹168 (Perfect Wash) to ₹315 (Matic Front Load) | Premium |
| Henko | Jyothy Labs | ₹140 (Stain Care) to ₹300 (Matic) | Mid to premium |
| Tide | Procter & Gamble | ₹99 (Naturals) to ₹136 (Plus) | Mid |
| Sunlight | Hindustan Unilever | ₹112 | Mid |
| Rin | Hindustan Unilever | ₹100 (Bright) | Mid |
| Ghadi | RSPL | ₹81 (₹70 on 3 kg) | Economy |
| Wheel | Hindustan Unilever | ₹74 to ₹84 | Economy |
| Nirma | Nirma Limited | ₹48 (Active) to ₹64 (Yellow) | Economy |
Two names from older lists deserve a note. Presto! is Amazon's own private label, sold only on Amazon.in at roughly ₹120 to ₹130 per kg in bulk packs, so it is not a brand a shop can stock. Fena, Patanjali, Godrej (Fab and Matic liquids), Rinjal and Jyothy's More Light are also in the market; they are worth knowing but there is no reliable public data to rank them.
How do premium detergents (Surf Excel, Ariel) compare?
Surf Excel (HUL) starts cheaper than Ariel (P&G), but on machine-wash powder the two meet at ₹290 to ₹315 per kg as of August 2026.
Surf Excel is India's largest detergent brand by value. It crossed ₹8,200 crore in sales in 2022, the first Indian home-care brand past $1 billion, and HUL credited liquids, fabric conditioners and ₹10 packs for the jump. The range now has four rungs. Easy Wash powder is the hand-wash entry at ₹128 for 1 kg; Quick Wash is ₹198; Matic Top Load powder is ₹260 and Matic Front Load ₹216 to ₹290. Liquids sit at ₹179 to ₹235 per litre for Matic Top Load and ₹209 to ₹220 for Front Load. Pack sizes run from a ₹10 sachet (60 g powder, 50 ml liquid) up to 7 kg. One oddity: the 5 kg Easy Wash pack at ₹780 works out to ₹156/kg, more than the 1 kg pack, so bigger is not automatically cheaper here.
Ariel is P&G's premium line and is positioned almost entirely around machine wash. Ariel Matic Front Load powder is ₹315 for 1 kg (₹685 for 2 kg); Matic Top Load is ₹290; Ariel Complete is ₹154 for 700 g (about ₹220/kg). Ariel now also has a cheaper hand-wash line, Perfect Wash, at ₹168 per kg. Power Gel liquid is ₹159 (top load) to ₹179 (front load) for 900 g, and Ariel sells Matic 4in1 PODS as well. Online discounts of 25 to 50% on Ariel are common, which is why shelf prices look closer to Surf Excel than the MRPs suggest.
Pick Surf Excel if you hand wash or want one brand across hand and machine. Pick Ariel if you run a front-loader and buy in 2 kg or larger packs during offers.
Which mid-range brands (Tide, Henko, Nirma, Presto) give the best value?
Tide Naturals at ₹99 per kg is the best-value mid-range powder in the August 2026 check, with Rin and Sunlight close behind.
Tide (P&G) splits into Tide Naturals (1 kg ₹99, 3 kg ₹225 which is ₹75/kg) and Tide Plus Double Power (970 g for ₹110 to ₹132). Note the 970 g pack: it replaced the 1 kg pack, a grammage cut that hides part of the price rise since 2021. Tide also sells Power Gel liquid (1 kg ₹159) and Matic PODS (357 g ₹499), and bulk packs go up to 10 kg.
Henko (Jyothy Labs, alongside Ujala and Mr. White) is priced above the mid pack. Henko Stain Care powder is ₹140 for 1 kg and ₹130/kg at 6 kg; Henko Matic powder is ₹270 (top load) to ₹300 (front load), and Matic liquid ₹200 to ₹230 per litre. Discounts of 25 to 35% are typical, so the shelf price lands near ₹100 to ₹110 per kg for Stain Care. It is positioned on stain removal, not on price.
Rin (HUL) is the whites brand. Rin Bright powder is ₹100 for 1 kg (500 g ₹52, 4 kg ₹440); Rin Refresh is ₹113. The Rin bar is ₹10 for 130 g, and Rin now has a Matic liquid at ₹99 to ₹125 for 850 ml, which older brand lists missed.
Sunlight (HUL), a Lever Brothers soap brand from the 19th century, is now a colour-care powder at ₹112 per kg (3 kg ₹300, so ₹100/kg) with a ₹2 sachet of 10 g, a 150 g bar at ₹30 and a Matic liquid at ₹140 for 800 ml. At this price it sits above Rin, so it is mid-range rather than economy.
Nirma belongs in the economy section below (its ₹48/kg MRP makes it the cheapest national brand, not a mid-range one), and Presto! is Amazon-only, as noted above. Both appeared in older mid-range lists on prices that no longer hold.
What are the cheapest mass-market detergents (Ghadi, Wheel, Rin, Sunlight)?
Nirma Active is the cheapest national-brand powder at ₹48 per kg MRP as of August 2026, with Wheel at ₹74 to ₹84 and Ghadi at ₹81 per kg (₹70 on a 3 kg pack).
Nirma (Nirma Limited, founded 1969 in Ahmedabad by Karsanbhai Patel) still sells on price. Nirma Active 1 kg is ₹48; Nirma Yellow is ₹25 for 500 g and ₹128 for 2 kg. Modern-trade listings only show 500 g, 1 kg and 2 kg packs, so small kirana sachets could not be verified.
Ghadi (RSPL, Kanpur) launched in the late 1980s and is the volume anchor of the economy tier. Ghadi powder is ₹81 for 1 kg, ₹210 for 3 kg and ₹375 for 5 kg. It is no longer the cheapest per kg on paper, but it has expanded upward: Ghadi Smart Matic powder is ₹135 per kg and Ghadi Matic liquid is ₹220 for 2 litres. The Ghadi bar comes in ₹5 (60 g) and ₹10 (145 g) sizes.
Wheel (HUL) was launched in the late 1980s as HUL's answer to Nirma after Nirma pushed it off the top spot in 1985, per Business Standard. Wheel Active 2-in-1 powder is ₹84 for 1 kg, ₹59 for 800 g and ₹148 for 2 kg (₹74/kg), plus a ₹10 pack of 100 g. Wheel and Ghadi are now roughly at par on price.
The whole economy tier has moved up 30 to 40% since 2021 or 2022, when Ghadi was around ₹60/kg and Wheel ₹58/kg. Rin and Sunlight, once grouped here, have priced themselves into the mid tier at ₹100 to ₹112 per kg. None of HUL's four detergent brands has been merged or discontinued; Sunlight in particular is active with powder, bar and liquid in 2026.
Powder, liquid, bar or pod: which detergent format should you pick?
Powder is still the largest format in India, but every major brand now sells a machine-wash liquid, and the right format depends on how you wash, not on the brand.
Hand wash and bucket soak suit powder or bar; a bar is the cheapest way to spot-treat collars and cuffs. Top-load machines take powder or liquid; front-load machines need a low-foam "matic" product, which is why Surf Excel, Ariel, Henko, Ghadi and Rin all sell separate top-load and front-load SKUs. Pods (Ariel and Tide Matic PODS) are one-dose convenience for front-loaders and cost the most per wash.
Liquid entry prices in August 2026 run ₹99 to ₹235 per litre or kg: Rin Matic ₹99 to ₹125 for 850 ml, Sunlight Matic ₹140 for 800 ml, Tide Power Gel ₹159 for 1 kg, Ariel Power Gel ₹159 to ₹179 for 900 g, Surf Excel Matic ₹179 to ₹235 per litre, Henko Matic ₹200 to ₹230 per litre, Ghadi Matic ₹220 for 2 litres. Both Surf Excel and Ariel sell ₹10 liquid sachets (50 to 60 ml) for trial.
Compare cost per wash, not cost per kg. A concentrated liquid or a matic powder uses a smaller dose per load than a hand-wash powder, so a ₹200 pack can outlast a ₹100 one. Check the dosage on the pack, divide the pack price by the number of loads it claims, and compare that figure.
What should you check before buying a detergent?
Match the detergent to the machine and the fabric first; price is the last filter.
Surfactants lift dirt off fabric and hold it in the water; enzymes break down protein and oil stains. Stain-focused products (Surf Excel Matic, Ariel, Henko Stain Care) lean on enzymes, which is why they cost more and why they are the wrong choice for wool.
For wool, The Woolmark Company's guidance is a neutral, mild detergent on a wool or delicate cycle at 40°C or below, or a hand wash at about 30°C, then drying flat. Do not use an enzyme-plus-bleach mix on wool; Woolmark mentions enzyme detergent only as a spot treatment for specific stains, followed by neutralising with vinegar. Baby clothes and delicates do better with milder formulations and a thorough rinse.
Hard water (common across north and west India) needs more detergent or a product formulated for it; if clothes come out stiff or grey, water hardness is the usual cause, not the brand. Front-loaders need low-foam matic products; ordinary powder over-foams and can damage the machine. Finally, check the per-kg price on the size you actually buy. Bulk is usually cheaper (Ghadi 3 kg at ₹70/kg versus ₹81 for 1 kg) but not always (Surf Excel Easy Wash 5 kg at ₹156/kg versus ₹128).
Which detergent brands should a kirana or general store stock?
Stock the ₹10 price point in every tier, because that is where detergent moves fastest at a kirana counter. HUL told ET that ₹10 packs drove Surf Excel's 32% sales jump in 2022.
The ₹10 SKUs on the market in August 2026: Wheel 100 g, Tide Naturals 140 g, Surf Excel Quick Wash 60 g, Surf Excel and Ariel liquid sachets (50 to 60 ml), Rin bar 130 g and Ghadi bar 145 g. Sunlight goes lower with a ₹2 sachet of 10 g. Big packs (3 kg and up) sell to households that have moved to machine wash; they earn more per sale but tie up shelf space and cash, and a few are priced higher per kg than the 1 kg pack, so customers who compare will notice.
Margins differ by segment and by distributor, and no public source states them, so ask your distributor for the trade scheme rather than trusting a number from a blog. Directionally, economy powders turn over fastest on thin margins, premium matic packs and liquids carry more rupees per unit but sell slower outside cities.
Distributor access works differently for each house. HUL and P&G run area-wise distributors and expect a minimum monthly order; RSPL (Ghadi) and Nirma have deep rural distribution and are often the easiest to open an account with. Buying the same brands from a wholesaler costs a little more per case but needs no minimum. The distributor playbook is similar to other FMCG lines, and the guide on starting a soft drink agency walks through how those accounts get opened.
Detergent is one of the products most often sold on udhar at a kirana, especially the monthly 1 kg and 3 kg packs. To track customer credit, a free khata app like OkCredit keeps every entry backed up and sends automatic payment reminders.
If you are sizing up a bigger retail play, the piece on how to get a DMart franchise explains why modern trade buys detergent on different terms. Brand maps for other fast-moving categories, such as hair colour brands in India and biscuit manufacturers in India, follow the same tiering logic.
FAQs
Which is the most used detergent brand in India?
By value, Surf Excel: ₹8,200 crore in sales in 2022, the first Indian home-care brand past $1 billion (Business Standard, Feb 2023). By volume, Ghadi is the most commonly cited leader; RSPL took the top spot in 2012 and still claims it, but no current independent volume share is published.
Does a higher price mean better cleaning?
No. Nirma at ₹48/kg and Ariel Matic at ₹315/kg (MRPs, Aug 2026) are built for different wash methods, not a six-times difference in cleaning. Premium products add enzymes, low-foam formulas and fragrance for machines; for bucket washing, an economy powder with the right dose does the job.
Liquid or powder: which is better for a washing machine?
Either works in a top-loader. For a front-loader, use a low-foam matic product, powder or liquid. Liquids dissolve fully in cold water and leave no residue; compare cost per wash, since a ₹159 to ₹235 litre of liquid usually covers more loads than a similarly priced hand-wash powder.
How much detergent should you use per load?
Follow the dosage printed on the pack; it is set for that formula and a standard 6 to 7 kg load. Use the higher end of the range for hard water or heavy soil, and never overdose a front-loader, because excess foam leaves residue and strains the machine.
Which detergent is cheapest per kg in India?
In the August 2026 BigBasket MRP check, Nirma Active was cheapest at ₹48 for 1 kg, followed by Wheel at ₹74 to ₹84 and Ghadi at ₹81 (₹70 per kg on the 3 kg pack). Shelf prices vary by region and by discount.
