What is an income certificate?
An income certificate serves as verification of your family's total income. It is used to ensure that inhabitants of a state are eligible for various government programs, whether they are supplied by the federal government or the state government. In some parts of the country, this certification is also known as an 'EWS certificate,' which stands for 'Economically Weaker Section Certificate.'
An income certificate is one of the most important documents. It is used to avail of many benefits, some of which include:
- Benefits for the government's civil welfare schemes like NREGA, Food for works, etc.
- Reservations in colleges and government exams.
- Getting scholarships in schools, national and international colleges, coaching institutes, etc.
- Getting exemption from various direct taxes.

Documents required to apply for an income certificate:
- Address proof
- Identity proof
- Salary slip (if employed)
- Land revenue receipt (for farmers)
- Some other documents like the voter id card, land revenue receipt, gaon burah certificate, land revenue receipts, etc.
Procedure to apply for an income certificate
Income certificates can be generated both offline and online. In the offline mode, you need to go to the office of the sub-divisional magistrate to submit the form. It is a lengthy process when compared with the online method. Let us look at both, the modern or the online method of filling up the application form, and then examine the traditional method.
Online application procedure
You can get the income certificate form of all the states from the official website of the state. For example, if you are from Maharashtra, you can get the online form from the Official Maharashtra website.
You have to then follow a series of steps:
Step 1: Open the browser
Open any web browser. You can also use your mobile phones to generate the income certificate.
Step 2: Go to the official website of the government
Open the official website of your state. To get the official site of your state, you can search it here.
Step 3: Fill the registration form
Click on ‘Register Now.’ You will get a registration form where you have to enter your:
- Date of birth
- Mobile number
Wait to receive an OTP.
Step 4: Verify the Captcha Code
Step 5: Save the document
After verifying the code, click on the save button to save the document.
Step 6: You will be redirected to the Login Page
You can log in by using/;

- Entering the Captcha Code
Step 7: You will be redirected to the new page, you can enter the new password there.

- Reset the Password
- Verify the password
Step 8: Log in
After setting the password, you can log in using the user ID that you have saved. Then, enter the password, captcha code, and click on submit. You will then be logged into the portal.
Step 9: Apply for an Income Certificate
On the navigation bar on the top, click on apply. A sub-box will open from where you can apply for various certificates like domicile certificate, birth, caste, death, income. Choose an income certificate.
Step 10: Fill the form.
Fill the income certificate application form. Information will include:
- Father’s name
- Family members and their details
- Aadhar Card number
- Annual income
- Choose the reason for applying for an income proof certificate, etc.
- Declaration document
- Ration Card
- Salary Slip
- Upload all the mentioned documents (Format Jpg, Png, up to 100kb in size)
Step 11: Submit the form
To submit the form, click on the submit button.
Step 12: Print the form
Click on the ‘print’ button at the end of the form.
Step 13: Click on Payment.
Enter on the payment button, you will be redirected to the payment window. The fees may differ from Rs 10 to Rs. 20. It changes from place to place. The payment could be made using Debit Card, Credit Card, and UPI.
Step 14: Click on Submit.
Step 15: Congratulations!
Once you have completed the procedure, you will get your form following all the verification.
Offline or traditional application procedure
If the infrastructure of your state/ district does not enable online downloading of documents, you may need to send physical copies to the office of your concerned district authority. The application fee is low and varies from state to state.
You may also be required to sign an affidavit stating that all of the information in the paper is true to the best of your knowledge based on your experience. The income certificate is usually issued within 10 to 15 official days.
You will need to fill these three forms:
- Application form
- Declaration form
- Patwari Verification form
After filling the form you need to attach an Aadhar card and photograph. You need to submit the form to the Tahashildar’s office. He will upload the form and complete the procedure. You can collect your certificate in seven to ten days.
